Background:Sildenafil citrate, sold under the brand name Viagra, is a widely used medication for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of sildenafil citrate with sildenafil citrate plus aripiprazole (Abilify) in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Methods:This was a multicenter, randomized, parallel-group, single-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-dummy, fixed-dose study in the outpatient clinic of the General Hospital of Wroclaw. Patients with mild to moderate, moderate, or severe erectile dysfunction of any etiology were randomly assigned to sildenafil citrate (n=30) or sildenafil citrate plus aripiprazole (n=30) for 6 months. All patients were evaluated for the presence of erections, the presence of premature ejaculation (PE), and the presence of premature ejaculation with respect to sexual performance. The study was carried out in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, and patients with chronic kidney disease had to have a history of diabetes or hypertension, as well as a history of a strong anti-hypertensive agent (ACE inhibitor or ARIA). Patients with severe comorbidities were excluded. Sildenafil citrate was given in a randomized order and sildenafil citrate plus aripiprazole was given in a randomized order. Patients were assessed after 6 months of treatment and compared using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) questionnaire and the American Society of Erectile Dysfunction (ASED) questionnaire.
Results:Sildenafil citrate (n=30) and sildenafil citrate plus aripiprazole (n=30) significantly improved erectile function in a significant difference in the mean score for erectile function between the treatment group and the placebo group. However, the mean score for the presence of premature ejaculation (PE) was significantly higher in the sildenafil citrate plus aripiprazole group than in the sildenafil citrate plus placebo group.
Conclusion:The efficacy of sildenafil citrate plus sildenafil citrate was better than that of sildenafil citrate plus aripiprazole. These results are encouraging and warrant further investigation in patients with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction. However, further studies are needed to confirm these results.
